There is often a significant genetic component to Lyme in terms of
those who get sickest. The spectrum of genetic factors relevant in Lyme
likely apply in some useful (and associative) way across a spectrum of
autoimmune AND infectious disease. There is probably a bounty of profit
that could result, and a knowledgeble person could make the argument
for that. Moreover, there are tens and probably hundreds of thousands
of chronic Lyme patients who would purchase a pharmaceutical
constituting the treatment.
What is important to biotech is the bottom line, and I believe the
bottom line for products generated could be pretty good --especially if
they were applied to other diseases in the immune spectrum. I do not
agree that Lyme patients are unattractive as partners because their
disease is not genetic. The spirochetes have genes and associated
proteins. The genes and proteins of the spirochetes are targets, and
they provoke a host of immune cascades in us which are targets too.
In both diseases we are seeking a molecular solution, that is the
point. To make the pitch and find partners what you would need is an
experienced biotech business executive --like the one spearheading the
CF effort; put in the proper molecular context, the distinction you are
making would not be a barrier at all. GG
