".......It is important to note that the chronic manifestations of Lyme
disease may occur months to years after the acute infection and that
our study was limited to a 180-day follow-up period. Future studies
with longer follow-up are needed to establish the true failure rate and
long-term sequelae associated with these therapeutic regimens. Our
study emphasizes the benefits of a double-blind, prospective study
design in assessing therapy for an infectious disease for which
long-term follow-up is necessary and clinical criteria are the sole
measure of efficacy. ...."
