If I remember there was somewhat of a debate as to whether borrelia
japonica was really much different at all from sensu latu (thought of
as the "European" strain) (and by strain it includes MANY subspecies).

And that it was sort of a political microbiological taxonomy debate and
the Japanese insisted on calling it something other than what the
Europeans called THEIR strain (strange thing to have national pride
over).

That is IF I remember correctly--but it seems to be a strange thing to
just imagine?
