well I haven't read everything you're talking about wrt time of
transmission. personally (see post below) it is kind of a dumb issue as
you allude to because there is really no way of knowing how long the
tick was on you anyway unless you were stupid enough to watch the tick
crawl up your leg and then sat and watched it bite you.
I have talked several times with a researcher who studies OSP
expression in ticks and as of now he has me convinced of the >40 hours
rule with some exceptions as you mentioned for instance pulling the
tick off, maybe a tick bite in which the tick had recently been
attached to another host, etc.
