NEW ORLEANS -- More than 50 monkeys escaped Tuesday from a research
center on the Northshore.

Long-Tailed Macaque

All but three had been captured by Wednesday afternoon.

The animals, pigtail macaques (different from species pictured), were
being used for breeding at Tulane University's Primate Research Center
at the southern edge of Covington.

Cashier Wants Animals Captured -- And Fast

A spokesman said the escape happened after a caretaker failed to
properly secure a cage.

The spokesman said the animals are not dangerous and do not carry any
disease, however, he urged people not to approach them.

Covington resident Sarita Penn works at a nearby convenience store. She
said the animals can't be captured fast enough.

"I am not trying to be bothered with no monkeys," she said. "I don't
want to see no monkeys. I see enough fools around here."

Anyone who sees one of the macaques is asked to call the center at
(985) 871-6512.
