*Young child receives no extended treatment*
Brendan, 8 years old, has Lyme disease. He was bitten by a tick 3.5 years ago. Shortly after the tickbite Brendan got complaints. His parents reported the tickbite several times, but they were reassured: no rash, no treatment.
It wasn't until 2 years after the tickbite, when Brendan couldn't walk anymore because of joint pain and couldn't go to school anymore, that the parents finally got hearing: Brendan was referred to a pediatrician.
Bloodtests were done and they were positive. Brendan received IV-administration of antibiotics for 2 weeks and then 2 weeks of oral amoxicillin. At first there was only little improvement, but gradually Brendan improved.
June 2, 2005:
Brendan still has complaints. Lot's of tests were done, he even was being observed in the hospital for 2 weeks, but he didn't show as much complaints as he does at home. At the instance of the parents, the doctor was willing to prescribe 4 weeks of doxycycline, in spite of not being convinced of Lyme, because Brendan was treated sufficiently. The course was extended for 10 days by Brendan's GP.
Brendan got more ill the first 2 weeks of this course, but after that he improved every day. Now he can go back to school again for half days.
June 12, 2005:
The treatment for Brendan ended only 1 week ago and slowly all complaints come back: he feels unwell, has headache, is fatigued and has sore legs. On June 8, Brendan went to the hospitol again, but the doctors said they couldn't do anything for him anymore.
On June 14, Brendan goes to the hospitol again to see a specialist in CVS. The parents hope Brendan will receive antibiotics again.
One week ago, Brendan said: "Mamma, I don't have Lyme anymore, I feel completely well. Can I please go back to school again the whole days?"
Yesterday, under a quilt on the couch, Brendan said: "Mamma, I feel so bad. Like this I can never go to a children's party anymore and never go to school."
