well...give me some time to write out a comprehensible "translation",
or maybe someone else can. perhaps someone who knows more about the
immune system?
but basically, they've found in general that certain species are highly
resistant to Bb infection, and much of this is due to the effect their
specific complement {an immune system cascade which helps "kill"
invading organisms} has on Bb. Deer, for instance, while harboring
large numbers of adult ixodes ticks and neccessary for reproduction of
the tick, do not in most cases get the infection because mainly their
complement is able to avoid the CRASP/erp system which binds complement
in more susceptible hosts {such as humans}.
In general, Bb s.s., which is what we have in north america, is by far
the most resistant strain to host complement, likely due to its high
expression of erps and such. and humans are the most susceptible host.
the complement resistance profiles of garinii and azfelli are, um,
quite a bit different, in general.
this is all about the interaction of host and bacterial proteins. when
they say "C-terminal" or "N-terminal" they are referring to parts of
the protein. any given protein will have a "C-terminal" end, due to
protein structure and how they are transcribed. this is a COO- motif.
remember, amino acids which make up proteins {proteins can be thought
as strings of amino acids} and amino acids typically will have a COO-
group and an NH3 group. and the peptide bonds are formed in predictable
sequences around these groupings. "N-terminal" end refers the NH3 group
of the last amino acid on the other side of the protein, basically.
lol. no pun intended.
