I find this to be very interesting.
I mentioned in another thread I have a friend who gets IVIG for a
genetic immune disorder.
I notice it says its an off-lable treatment...any idea if insurance
companies (such as BC/BS) consider it to be 'experimental' for Lyme/
Babs? I know it is really expensive. My friend says its several
thosand each time. We have the same insurance (we work together-she's
posted on lymenet euro for advice managing her abx)...they will cover
her treatments but somehow I doubt it would be covered with lyme.
I really think there has to be an answer beyond abx. I'm not an
alterna-vista. And I believe the antibiotics are a large part of the
answer. BUT I think there is something we are missing.
Hi there, yes is extremely expensive, right know the insurance is
giving me trouble for it, even though it was submitted by my Neuro
with confirmation of an inflammatory process in the spinal fluid and
with a differential diagnosis for which IVIG is sort of one of the
best treatments (however is still considered off-label, go figure). I
don't know what the chances are to get it approved for Lyme treatment,
I would guess very low as you implied. Drs. don't really know how it
works but it just does, and the main use is precisely in autoimmune
conditions. Some think that the external antibodies neutralize the
ones that are attacking the body, this is somehow corroborated by the
fact that you most likely relapse if not on continued therapy (however
the time between treatments increases and in some cases people will go
on remission).
