This may be a prime example of when animal models don't work for humans.
Mice are rodents and their normal diet will not be high in protein. It
wouldn't be surprising if their body wasn't able to handle extra
protein, leading to the ammonium accumulation seen in the study.

On the other hand reports like this:

say that high protein diet for the mother leads to mice that live longer
than the control groups, whereas a low protein diet results in offspring
that die earlier.
