While drug companies do SOME R&D, much of it is happening at NIH,
universities and smaller start ups. They wait, watch while public
monies are expended then swoop in to grab up the license when it looks
good.

And indeed, you could replace the term "cancer" with "leishmaniasis"
and again, you'd be right that the scenario would never happen because
no drug company will bother to study the disease.

The integrity of clinical research in the United States has been
horribly compromised. And the situation is only deteriorating more and
more horribly, particularly under Bush.
