But this is a fundamentally very different situation then that of a
mixed diet containing said refined source. As I mentioned in another
context, the presence of iron-deficiency anemia suggests the problem
being the lack of red meat, not the presence of refined grains per se.

Of course, if refining grains mean people start eating less of the stuff
they need, that's one thing entirely.

It says a lot about nutritionally unbalanced diets.
It says nothing about a diet containing both (i.e. modern diet).
