Well, you should check your own country before blaming the other
countries... For your information, my government never issued any pyramid or
anything telling the people how they should it, nor tried to enforce it on
schools. There are only guidelines that dietitians must monitor the school
menues, but what nutritionnal scheme they chose to apply is up to the
dietitian. Likewise, in lieu of a food pyramid, there are advices that olive
oil might be good for your health, but that's all, I can still buy 100% pure
cooking lard or duck fat in *any* French supermarket. If you want dietetic
advices, you turn to a doctor, not the government or the food and drug
administration here...
My government doesn't tell me how much I should heat my meat. It doesn't
tell the restaurants that either. They can serve their meat raw if they so
wishes, and many actually do. They also serve eggs raw along with the raw
steak. The hygiene services will check that the food has no trace of
bacterias, but that's the extent of it, as long as food safety is achieved,
they can do it however they please. We are just made aware of the risk of
salmonellosis, and most people don't mind risking it. Few people suffer from
it anyway, more people die from choking on their food than from salmonella
anyway.
My government doesn't prevent me from buying raw milk or cheese made with
raw milk. It doesn't block imports from these or ban farmers from
manufacturing them. Even the most modest supermarket will carry these. The
government issues warnings that pregnant women and people with AIDS *should*
avoid them, but people are free to heed these warnings or not. There again,
accidents are virtually unknown. Maybe we're getting a better immune system
from not eating sterilized food all the time...
The only few bans we had on food where for real health reasons. Like on cow
brains and spine and some glands.
