When people are misled by advertising to think that the latest and
newest is the thing they need and go to their doctor who is on a
strict 2-minute time limit imposed by an accountant at an HMO and the
patient wants and the pharm reps have provided sufficient bribes, he
prescribes, not necessarily even having had or taken the time to
discover that the newest and latest is no better than the much less
costly oldest. These decisions accumulate and begin to produce an
enormous drag on the whole system while pharma pulls in profits.
Medicaid or other programs may restrict formularies. But more often
than not, it is simply translated into higher premiums, higher copays
and ultimately in more millions being uninsured or underinsured.
