The biggest problem is the Cl in sodium chloride. Also, practically
speaking, a variety of fruit and vegetables each day will attenuate the
"bad" effects of salt. Additionally, you can buy Celtic Sea salt,
which contains the natural trace minerals removed from white table
salt. I once made a bread with too much baking powder, and it was very
salty tasting, so that's a way of avoiding the Cl and getting the Na,
which has health benefits. Some people drink a bit with water as an
antacid, so you could try adding a bit to a dish. I'll stick to the
Celtic Sea salt, because the body needs Cl and I don't use that much of
it (relative to most Americans' use of table salt), and I also eat
several kinds of fruit each day. The NHLBI is clueless, for the most
part. They keep telling the same old nursery rhymes, and yet nobody
listens to them, so even if they are correct, what would it matter?
They should at least think about another way of conveying the
information. Instead, this is a way for them to get some media
attention and show that all the money they are getting isn't being
pissed away on bloated salaries for do-nothings (which is how I would
describe the situation, to a large degree).
