Of course it is. Olives are the wholefood, and anything "extracted"
from this is by definition refined. Yes, further refining can be done,
but taking away the fruit pulp is surely refining.
So is removing the stem, the leaves, the branches, the trunk, the roots, and
arguably, the soil. Why is an olive plucked from a tree and de-stemmed a
"whole" food?
Well nothing is set in concrete, but the part of the olive plant that
you eat is the fruit pulp. Of coures, this must be processed
considerably to make it edible. If you extract the oil from the normal
edible portion of he plant, I would call that refining. Like bauxite
with the iron removed is refined. Lots of foods are refined by
removing some or all of the fibre that comes with it, but then this is
all semantics. Who cares what a word means, except those who want to
communicate accurately? :=) jack
