Re: obese chinese kids eat fewer carbs

The topic of the role of ratios of fat, carbs, and protein intake as
relates to weight has been much discussed on this newsgroup. It has
been noted that in traditional asian diets that 70 percent of intake is
carbohydrates from refined grains with small amounts of meat.

Could average stature be related to that?

Yes, asian kids coming to n. america are almost always taller then their
parents when the western diet and increased ratios of protein are
consumed, a pattern valid also for kids in past years from many parts of
europe.

In recent
times obesity and related metabolic disorders have become greater as is
the familiar pattern the world over.

So, what have peoples with metabolic disorders in common nowadays?
Overeating (1), little exercise (2) and highly refined foods (3) spring to
mind.

Yep, but the first two can be shown more then the third to be a factor
except in that refined foods usually have more calorie density which is
clearly one cause of the overweight item. The chinese traditional diet
was about 70 percent "refined" carbs as milled grains and noodles so a
more detailed look at "refined" is due, it was "refined" with lower fat
and thus fewer calories.

Increased weight from overconsumption and less physical activity are
factors in common everywhere.

Ok.

An increase in fat is common also.

Yes, fatty pork is considered to tbe the height of meats if they can
afford it frequently. With all meat sources the fat is considered to be
the most desireable part, such as the skin of duck with its large layer
of fat attached. Fat is added to many foods and lard is used to fry if
available.

Is it? In percentual or just absolute terms? Besides, what kinds of fats,
exactly?

As to Americans, here are some facts:

+530 calories, 1970-2000.
+24.5% from refined grain,
+9% calories from added fats and oils,
+4.7% calories from added sugars.

For those who advocate that more carb intake is the principle cause of
weight gain and metabolic disorders and obesity the below suggests not.

Maybe it depends on what sources of carbs and what they are eaten with.

Of course, but the overriding factor is excess calorie intake to
activity level.

In short the overweight kids ate less carbs and more protein and fat
then normal weight kids.

Cause or effect? :-)

Neither, fat kids ate more which happened to include more meat and fat
sources. While the abstract does not mention, it is a reasonable
conclusion that most chinese kids are eating more meat these days
because of greater income but not in excess of calorie needs.

That is the major flaw in those who say that the single cause of weight
is carb intake alone. This is a counter example and was posted for that
purpose.
