Surprising similarities between soft drinks and battery acid
LiveScience.com is reporting on a new study that says some "popular
diet and sugared sodas are nearly as corrosive to the dental enamel as
battery acid."
The scientists, writing in the latest issue of General Dentistry, an
academic journal, concluded that all soft drinks threaten the teeth,
with non-colas posing the greatest risk because they often include
citric acid. (Here's a LiveScience.com graphic that shows the pH of
some popular beverages.)
The Academy of General Dentistry and other experts offer the following
advice:
· consume fewer soft drinks.
· use a straw, which limits how much soda comes in contact with your
teeth.
· choose root beer, which is uncarbonated and lacks the dangerous
acids.
· don't brush your teeth for 30-60 minutes, as waiting allows your
saliva to help the teeth recover from the erosion.

loss.
