Six months ago, at my 1st blood test, my total cholesterol was 289.
After adjusting my diet & exercising more for three months, I
confidently took another cholesterol test. The result was 277. Hardly
a significant difference. The doctor recommended Pravachol, a statin
drug.

Yesterday, I read info, seemingly from good authorities, atwww.cholesterolscore.com
that niacin can lower my cholesterol as well as Pravachol.

Given the difference in cost, which is extreme, is it possible that
niacin could be anywhere as effective? Is niacin the equivalent of
snake-oil, or is it the best kept secret?

A nutritional amount of niacin won't lower your cholesterol enough.
You would need a prescription for a pharmacological dose.

No you don't. Niacin is cheap and easy to obtain. I buy mine in 200 gram containers for $8 from beyond-a-century.com. Capsules and tablets are also cheap.

As to prescriptions, they tend to be of the timed release variety which is harder on the liver than immediate release. In between is a slo_niacin which is not immediate release but much faster than prescription time release. On can buy that over the counter as well.

It is recommend that one get some blood work to check liver enzymes before embarking on the Niacin path and then check again.

Personally, I take 2.5 grams of Niacin per day. I tell my doctor what I've done and what effect it had on blood work. No one has had a problem with it except one doctor whom I no longer see.

In addition to the standard CBC/CMT/Cholesterol blood work I get about 6 times a year, I also run a VAP test which is more accurate and measures many more items including particle size, something that Niacin will improve and statins will/can not. Niacin will also raise HDL significantly while statins are weak to no change in that area. Statins are better at reducing LDL but given a choice between reduced LDL with statins or better quality LDL with Niacin, I'll choose Niacin every time.

What were the component levels of your cholesterol reading (HDL, LDL,
VLDL, etc.)?

You may have a genetic propensity to produce cholesterol and any
dietary change wouldn't be sufficient.

What does your diet consist of? Some people may have some suggestions
as to how you can improve your diet.

Low carb Palieo/Cave man diet will typically have a dramatic effect, especially on lowering Trigs, a much better market of cardiovascular health.
