Hello, my name is Dave and I have prostatitis..........(All together HI
DAVE!.........Whoops, sorry, wrong support group, unless you have a 12 step
program here too.......) Actually, I was literally diagnosed 2 days ago
after thinking that I had picked up a UTI. After several rounds of
antibiotic therapy with no success, I went back to my urologist and he
    diagnosed prostatitis.

Here's the story. Seven years ago, I had a liver transplant. shortly after
the surgery, I was saddled with a neurogenic bladder, and having a great
deal of trouble completely emptying my urine. I was diagnosed with a form of
neurogenic bladder, but did recover most of my bladder function. In 2002, I
had an episode of organ rejection, and had to get a liver biopsy to diagnose
whether it was acute or chronic. For the procedure, they sedated me with
Versed and Demerol, and boom, my bladder shut down completely. I was forced
to start straight cathing myself 3-4 times a day. Now, I have adjusted
nicely to that indignity, and was going along fine until about a month and a
half ago, when the UTI symptoms started.

Now I have done a little reading on prostatitis, and one possible cause
listed is an autoimmune disorder. I lost my liver due to primary sclerosing
cholangitis, an autoimmune disease, and I also have ulcerative colitis,
another autoimmune disease. So now I am faced with a dilemma. Is this
prostatitis from the constant cathing, (the catheter has to snake its way
around the prostate to get into the bladder.) or is it possible I am facing
    more autoimmune issues?

I am a former NYC paramedic, now residing in Rochester, NY. I have an
extensive medical background, so please feel free to speak medicalese with
    me.

Any thoughts or advice would be helpful......................, BTW, I am 45
    years old.
