Some of you folks already know this, but for those who don't maybe this
information will help prevent you from pulling your hair out.
Recently we had a problem with explorer.exe (not Internet Explorer)
using up the system resources in Windows XP. I had MemoKit installed,
which probably prevented the computer from crashing, but the bad thing
is MemoKit also hid the problem for quite a long time. Eventually found
out that if you are in Windows Explorer, you should not right click on a
file to perform a task; you have to do a left click first to select the
file and then a right click on the same file. My encryption tool is in
Windows Explorer (PGP) and I was eliminating the left click selection
and going directly to a right click to bring up the box with the
encryption link. Bad idea, but I didn't know. Microsoft has a
workaround, but it didn't work on my computer.
Unfortunately, the system restore points were turned off at some point
for a virus scan, so I don't have a restore point to go back to. At
some point the problem fixed itself for a while but then returned.
The only way to temporarily solve this problem is to use Start>run and
then type in explorer.exe and it will start a fresh copy of explorer
that doesn't eat up system resources. I'm still trying to find a
permanent solution.
Another potential problem in Windows XP is right clicking on items in
the task bar (such as when you want to quickly close programs). Not
supposed to do that. Supposed to left click first then right click.
I have some bad habits to break Someone slap my hand if you see me do a
right click before a left click.
Barb.
