Barb, did you get rid of _all_ of XP's extraneous display overhead, or just
the menu fade/slide?
Try disabling all of the following:

Fade or slide menus into view
Fade or slide ToolTips into view
Fade out menu items after clicking
Show Shadows under menus
Slide open combo boxes
Slide taskbar buttons
Use a background image for each folder type

If that doesn't do it, try also disabling Use common tasks in folders.

Then you should be able to right click to select again without things
grinding to a halt.
As far as I am concerned the whole XP interface is a PITA. The first time I
installed XP, I almost threw out the CD and went straight back to Windows
2000. Then I did a little digging and found that you could get rid of most
of the ridiculous overhead and multistep menu displays with some judicious
customizing, and just keep the very few things that were arguably
improvements instead of excess overhead (such as being able to lock the
taskbar so things don't go galley-west if it gets moved around the screen.)
If I had to run XP with its default install it wouldn't be on a single
computer I own.
