Any file that you are constantly amending is more at risk than others. I've
been using Word for at least 12+ years and have never had the normal.dot
corrupt on me. I keep it lean and either use other templates for certain
customizations or my text expander. I have two dated backup files of
normal.dot just to make sure I didn't just back up a corrupt file. I also
resave old templates (.dot files) that I've possibly modified many times
over just to make sure they're relatively "fresh" at all times.
