I should have stuck my two cents in here before. The normal.dot template should
not be changed. The blank.doc is a carbon copy of the normal.dot template. You
should never save any formatting changes, macros, etc. back as a blank.dot or you
will never have a clean *** of paper again; you have to resave it with a new .dot
name such as blank2.dot. Once you save it with a .dot extension, it should
automatically bring up a carbon copy with a .doc extension in the same location as
the blank.doc (well actually you can specify which tab you want to store that new
.doc template).

I've seen people working, typing, directly into a .dot template because they are
totally confused as to what a .dot versus a .doc is.

Short and sweet, never work in a .dot template. You work in a copy of that
template, which is a .doc template and then save the new template as a .dot and it
will automatically create a .doc for you.
