It was April, 1969. I had worked late that night, installing a new greeting
card department in a drugstore in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Leaving about
10:30 p.m., I took a shortcut on State Road 209, heading south to go home to
Roswell.

About 30 miles down the deserted road, I saw a very bright light coming
towards me, just above the road. There was an Air Force bombing range near
this area, and I thought it was a jet fighter, buzzing the road. As the
bright light got closer and closer, I thought it might be a plane in trouble
and it was going to land on the road. I slammed on my brakes, pulled off
the side of the road, shut off my engine, and rolled down my window.

The light was still coming toward me, not getting any brighter, though.
Suddenly, it seemed to make a 90 degree turn and go straight up. I watched
it go up until it was out of sight. A cold chill went through my body on
this April night as it dawned on me that whatever this was, it made no sound
at all!! It also went straight up at what appeared to be a very high rate
of speed, but the light was still visible. If it had been an aircraft
landing light as I thought, it would not have been visible when it turned.

I got out of the car, and stood there in the dark for several minutes,
wondering what I had just seen. Looking up at the dark sky, I saw nothing
but stars, and looking around the horizon, I saw no planes, nothing. I also
realized that I had seen no blue or red lights or strobe lights, just the
single bright white light.

I drove on home, and when I walked into the house about midnight, Martha
said I was as white as a ghost.
