Straight line winds? Yeah, they usually do about the same damage without the
twisting of the trees. Tornadoes actually twist trees, causing them to break
apart.
My daughter was with her then-boyfriend when a straight line wind or tornado
hit the area they were in. A huge oak came crashing through the roof close
enough she could just reach out her hand where she was sitting and touch the
leaves. NWS determined that it was NOT a tornado. My understanding is that
all the trees were downed in the same direction, thereby showing it was not a
tornado.
We had much that same type of damage on some property after Hurricane Opal.
Lots of trees downed, none twisted and all pointing in the same direction.
