Initials or no initials, you are not going to get respect until you earn it.

Adding an additional initial in front of an initial that not many in the world
other than MTs means (CMT to FCMT) is not going to make that impression either.

The second Wednesday of every month is my favorite night, the night that my
favorite hospital committee meets. All doctors and one dummy ---- me. An hour
or two of business, then a few hours of dinner, drinks, and a lot of chatter,
and they always invite me to join.

I asked them about transcriptionists, and they gave me a not-so-pleasant
overview of their experiences. They are sick of these people, primarily
females, telling them how to punctuate, how to revise their sentences, or that
they must make sentences in their office notes. As they stated, they pay the
bills, they will make the decisions on what they want done, and they will face
the consequences if they get sued for a comma that should not be there. I
asked if credentially would make a difference to them, and they emphatically
stated it would --- they would not hire one because they were the ones who
thought they knew more about medicine that they (the doctor) did. One actually
had an MT return the notes to the office and tell him what she felt that
patient had, and he said she was so far off base that he laughed all day.

In reading so many boards, it becomes obvious that this is true. And the MTs
think they know more than RHIA's, RHIT's, coders, etc.

Everyone has a place in this world, and in the medical field, but you lose a
lot of respect when you start crossing lines and trying to be more important
than you are. I think on one board, I actually saw where AAMT thought they
were going to try to take over certification for HIPPA or something similar.
There is so much involved with HIPPA that I don't think an organization that
can straighten out a certification problem will ever be able to convince the
world that they are ready to take over certifying for HIPPA.

Yes, you do have to have knowledge to do medical transcription, and if you want
to make money at it, you cannot be looking up every word you type. But you
also have to learn how to respect others and not think that this is the only
profession that keeps medicine a profession. It is only a small phase of a
very large group that coordinates efforts to try to ensure patients get decent
and adequate care.
