I've really noticed that the kids eat in cycles, ravenous and then
bird-like, which I think must be related to growth spurts. My mother was
very strict about mealtimes, we had to "clean our plates" or have it for
breakfast. Once on my own, I had a weight problem, because I always felt
that I *had* to clean my plate all the time, and five years later, after
having my own child, I realized that finishing what's on your plate is not
the best attitude.
I am much more relaxed about meals than my mother was, and I believe my
daughter is better off, she's definitely not overweight, I am within 10
pounds of my goal weight, and have been for 5 years (lost 52 pounds since
she was 3, have kept it off (she's almost 10 now). I believe this is
because I can push my plate away unfinished, with only a small amount of
guilt at throwing food away. Also, as far as sweets, I never restrict them,
because I believe that has an opposite effect on the child. You can place a
bowl of salad and a chocolate cake in front of her, and she will choose the
salad because the cake is not a big deal. My mother and I are amazed to see
her refuse to eat all of her cookie or all of her cake. She takes a few
bites and loses interest. There are no bad foods, IMHO, just bad habits.
