It's just a matter of semantics. I am unquestionably an IC by any
standards. I really don't call my clients "boss" but I have certainly made
the statement to one or two of them, "You're the boss" when they have
requested something a little off the norm. An IC does work for a doc or a
practice, even if she is independent. I have at least a couple of clients I
have done work for so long that they consider me part of the "staff" and, in
fact, I am always included in staff parties or lunches, etc.. But I have no
trouble meeting any of the requirements the IRS or DOL puts forth.
