Actually the Saluki is one of the oldest breeds of dogs--they originated in
Iran/Iraq. They are pictured in some of the Egyptian tombs! They come in
either smooth or feathered varieties--I prefer the feathered--come in many
different colors. They are quite tall, very lean (people think you don't
feed them enough!). They are absolutely fantastic athletes, and like most
desert animals have the most beautiful eyes. They are more catlike in
temperament, very independent. The Arabs hunted with them. The falcons
would sight the game, the Salukis wound bring it down. They are sometimes
called Gazelle Hounds--in the sighthound group. They are the ancestor of
the Afghan, and the greyhound, actually faster than the greyhound over
distance. They are breathtaking to watch run! The Koran forbids dogs in
the tent, so the canny Arabs had their dogs , which lived on the outskirts
on the tribe--I think they called them kadish, never in the tents, but the
Salukis were reincarnated royalty, not dogs, and lived in the tents with
their families! You never referred to a Saluki as a dog. I just think they
are beautiful, very intelligent (though not the easiest to train because of
their independent nature), and extremely loving. I've wanted another one
for 20 years. So, there's my "frivolous" money gone!
