RAM Upgrade Question

I'm running XP Pro. Without opening the box, is there a way to
determine what type of RAM I need to buy for upgrading? I'm thinking
of a possible diagnostic utility or some such thing. I'm reluctant to
open the box because this computer has been threatening to die for a
while now, and I don't want to disturb anything unnecessarily if
there's another way to determine what I need to buy. Thanks.

Margie
