I've been bitten by the outsourcing bug. Two accounts gone to India.
This took a big chunk out of my income (the two accounts totaling
$2500/month) and I've decided to hit the road.
I had been transcribing for one doctor since 1996. He was extremely
pleased with the quality of my service. However, in an effort to cut
costs, he replaced my $.14/line service with a $.09/line service with
MTs in India. He gave me no notice.
The second account was a doctor who left me a year ago to go with EMR
with Dragon voice dictation. After several months with Dragon, he began
falling behind. When they finally couldn't see him behind all the
charts stacked on his desk (what happened to EMR/paperless office!!), OM
called me and asked if I'd be willing to help him get caught up. I went
into the office and transcribed directly into his system. Did that for
two months. Then he found the $.09/line service.
These docs just added insult to injury. Seems that the infidelity bug
bit my husband of 23 years, and he left me for another woman last Dec.
Now I don't have the safety net of his income anymore. After a lot of
thought (and sleepless nights), I've decided to leave MT and apply for
secretarial/admin jobs with the federal government. Imagine... paid
sick leave, real vacation and holidays, health insurance, retirement
benefits, 3 hours a week allowed during your work day to exercise, and
regular pay increases. I think I'm gonna be okay.
Transcription has served me well these past nine years. It allowed me
to be at home with my young sons while making a decent income, and I
thoroughly enjoyed the work. I'll miss it and may even pick up an
account on the side just to keep my hand in it. For now, though, I need
the stability of a regular 9-5 job with excellent benefits. I chose the
government primarily because of the retirement health benefits, which
you don't find with many companies anymore, and the ability to move up
rather rapidly. I'll continue to be a lurker here and may even jump in
with my 2 cents every now and then!
