I'm not sure I understand everything here. I am working with remote access
with one account. I do have access to patient files on the remote computer.
Nothing is ever transferred to my computer. I do have complete access to my
computer while I am working for access to internet and sites I occasionally
need to use. Dates of previous visits are easy for me to access, but once
the doc has signed them they cannot be changed, but they can be referred to
if necessary. In my particular case I do not need to refer to them except
very rarely if the current dictation might refer to something I need to
know. Almost never happens.

Working by remote access can be slow at times. Weekends and nights I can
type as fast on the remote computer as I can on mine. Weekdays I sometimes
just have to log off and try again later, I cannot afford to slow my typing
to 30 words a minute.

The word processor I must use on the other system stinks! I could cut and
paste probably from my WP11, but that would be cumbersome. The doctors
office can access the program with no problem at any time except the
particular patient I am working on. Since I am working on "yesterday's" or
"this morning's" files that has not been a problem.

To line count I have had to create a document in my WP 11 and cut and paste
what I have typed to that document. Since there is no formatting involved,
and it is just one big document, I can do this pretty efficiently. I use
that for line count.

It takes me approximately 35% longer to do the dictation, although I am no
longer printing and delivering work which has to be taken into
consideration. The doc has put my word expander on his computer for me,
which many offices would not be willing to do, and I would NOT, under any
circumstances, be willing to work without it.
I am able to log on to his computer 24/7 as his server is on all the time.
Being able to just log on during office hours would be TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE,
because those are the hours I run into slowdown. The program I am working w
ith is I believe Medisoft or Medinotes, the Charting Plus module.

Don't know if any of this is helpful or not from someone who is already
working with an EMR. Keep in mind that many of us MTs type at speeds well
over 100 wpm, so sometimes what works for you will not work for the MT, and
if you cannot type at those speeds, and use an expander, you can't make
enough money at this job to be worth doing!
