"Tell the kid you'll get him the prize and be done with it!"
You've got it, Rae.
We go through this every year when my son's school has its candy sale.
Each child is expected to sell 2 boxes. The take-home letters all
stress that children aren't to be sent door-to-door. The focus is on
each class achieving near-total participation rather than on which
individual student can sell the most.
Our solution is to donate to the school in cash the amount they'd
receive as profit if he sold the candy. They count this as satisfying
his participation requirement; every class which meets its goal is
invited to an ice cream social. Last May's sale netted about $5000,
enough to "save" the music program for another year.
I remember selling magazines and Halloween candy door to door in middle
school. The magazine sale won me a groovy black light bulb and poster
set, but I lost the money for the Halloween candy on the way to school.
I did better with the annual Camp Fire Girls candy sale: on the
strength of our sales our group (troop?) was allowed to attend the
special Camp Fire Girls day at Disneyland. (I understand boys are part
of Camp Fire now.)
"chincy (sp?) prize"
Since you asked, it's chintzy.
