We lost my daughter's mare during Andrew. They tell you not to keep them in
the barn, but to put them in pasture. We put our 4 horses we had at that
time in our lime grove where we felt the small trees would give them some
protection from flying objects, and none were big enough to injure them.
The 3 horses who stayed in the pasture didn't have a scratch. Apparently my
daughter's mare got separated from her buddies and panicked. She went over
a downed fence (6-ft. chain link) and we found her about a half a mile from
home. She had run into a large avocado tree in the dark and broke her neck.
We didn't find her for 2 days, and I just hope she died quickly. We have an
8-ft.-high fenced "round pen" (a small well-fenced ring used for training
purposes) that was undamaged during Andrew. It is in a wooded area, but is
very sturdy, and no really big trees. Ever since Andrew we have put the
horses there, with "break-away" halters, with luggage tags with name and
address attached--there were hundreds of loose and abandoned animals after
the storm and no way to identify them. So far that has proved a safe haven,
but we have never had another storm as bad as Andrew. We will not evacuate
here because of the animals, but we are on high ground, and do have what
proved to be "Andrew-proof" areas to bunker down. In Andrew I did have an
ill horse who was under vet care, and we took him with us to a windowless
portion of our barn--which was built by a drug dealer with unlimited funds,
and survived Andrew with practically no damage (about $200 for the roof
repair). So we do feel safe there. I want to build some straight stalls in
that building where we could put the horses, but so far haven't talked
anyone into doing that.
The animal suffering caused by hurricanes is terrible. Animals are
abandoned. They are left in houses that are destroyed. It makes an animal
lover ill. You can't take any animals to the shelters, which I can
understand, but it makes many people refuse to go to shelters! Our animals
are "family" and there is no way we will leave them.
Right now it looks encouraging for those of us on the southeast coast to get
nothing more than a tropical blow, which we are used to. So, we breathe a
sigh of relief, and then feel guilty for being relieved that somebody else
is going to get the brunt of it, but you can't help feeling the relief! But
I worry about the many friends I have up north (anything north of Lake
Okeechobee is north to us).
