Carol,
It is possible to upgrade to XP Pro as has been said. The advantages
to the average home use without a network are nil. XP Pro nor Home come
with Excel, Work etc. Pro's main advantages are for networking to other
computers. However, a new computer off the shelf "may" be loaded with
Microsoft Works, which offers programs that do work similarly to Word
and Excel. I don't recall if a Publisher type program is in it. Check
what comes preloaded on the computer you are interested in.
Dell's are most recently coming preloaded with Wordperfect (yeck) But
offers upgrades to Microsoft Office.
Another consideration may be a free download called Open office. Copy
and paste this link for more info.

It's "suppose" to be a free substitute for Microsoft products at zero
cost and from what I've heard, some like it very well. I myself have
never tried it but thought it might be of interest to you, as Microsoft
office suite is
pretty pricey. $200-500 range.
Hope this helps!
