My sister had a baby with Trisomy 12, which is also lethal. They did not find
it until she was 6 months pregnant. She wa in the Air Force, and they forced
her to carry the fetus until term, even though they knew it would not live. It
died 2 hours after birth. Needless to say, she had a total mental breakdown,
it ruined her marriage, it ruined her entire life. The Air Force, when they
finally decided something was wrong, referred her to a perinatologist who
recommended abortion, but naturally that would not be allowed, since AF owns
your body. Phyllis, or others who disagree with this situation, can you truly
say you can justify a woman in this situation being forced to continue a
pregnancy that you know will result in death and in a total decline of the
mental status of the mother? Is it really worth that just to try to win a
vote? I think not. My sister is now at a stage of being almost an invalid,
other than she can walk and talk, but the talking is veyr limited. She cannot
go out in public where she sees a child without a total relapse. She is frigid
for fear that she would have another child with the same condition. She has no
confidence in herself. She cannot even cook a simple lunch without calling for
help. This is a woman who was one of the best cooks I ever knew. This was
also a woman who was an RN and tried to help everyone.

This whole mess has been caused by incompetence of the doctors who treated
her, refusal of the Air Force to allow her the treatment recommended by her
specialist, and a few others who tried to play God, just like GWB is trying to
do. Forget this natural birth, death and grieving crap. There would have
been a few less months of grieving knowing that she would have a child that
would not have a brain, would never function, and knowing that she was
contributing to having to carry that poor fetus who, for all anyone knew, was
totally suffering during the entire pregancy. So much for your retoric.

And we can add to this scenario those women who cannot afford or cannot find an
OB doctor and rely on midwives for obstetrical care. Have you seen a fetus
with the head wedged into the birth canal so tight it cannot be released?
Maybe you need to delve a little deeper into what happens in the real world.
