I don't use PCAnywhere, but I believe its latest versions give you the
option of connecting using the internet or a direct dialed modem-to-modem
connection The latter option would always run at dialup speed. The former
would run at the speed of your connection. A direct dialed connection would
be considered basically secure, since it would run entirely over the phone
lines. Sensitive data moving over an internet connection should be
encrypted.
One other thing to keep in mind is that PCAnywhere and its relatives are
remote control programs. If your object is to actually access and take over
the running of a computer remotely, then that is the kind of program you
need. If what you actually want to do is just move files from one computer
to another, remote control software is a poor choice for the purpose.
