Sex education was unheard of in our public schools until the early 80s when
our daughters were in high school. My second daughter was in our township
high school where there was quite a brouhaha about the course being
taught...so much so that the principal held a meeting in the school
auditorium about the course, discussing what would be taught, followed by a
question/answer session. (Oddly, our oldest daughter was in a private
nonsectarian high school which did not teach any sex ed courses.) As a
Catholic mother I was thrilled to see the course being taught as it got me
off the hook. I was a virgin when I married at 21, but I was enough up
with the times to realize that the odds of my daughters' being virgins until
marriage were slim to none. This created a moral dilemma for me. On the
one hand, I wanted my daughters to know how to protect themselves, but on
the other hand, I was afraid that if I discussed this with them it might
give them the message that I approved of premarital sex. The sex education
course opened discussions among the three of us, and I know we all benefited
from it. Looking back 20+ years it's hard to believe how sexual freedom has
changed. We were comparatively so Victorian!!!
