I have no idea whether the guy did it or not, and haven't really been
following the case. However, given that it appears he was probably your
basic low-down cheater, this may actually have been his standard pickup
line. You'd be surprised how many slime balls will claim to be widowers
when trying to get into some woman's pants. If you claim to be single after
a certain age, women tend to wonder what is wrong with you that you have
never married. If you claim to be separated/divorced, they wonder how much
baggage you are still paying for and/or why you didn't stick it out the
first time around. But claim to be a widower, and they not only figure that
proves you are the marrying kind, but you've got the whole sympathy shtick
going for you as well. Therefore a certain variety of married snake on the
slither will routinely claim to be a widower. They can even get past an
obvious wedding ring by claiming it is still on their finger for sentimental
reasons--they just haven't been able to bring themselves to take if off yet,
choke, sob.
