I'll second that. You don't want to find yourself trying to handle a
traffic emergency only to discover a cat under the brake pedals or
scrambling around your feet. There's also the risk of the cat getting
out and getting lost when you stop for gas or for a break. Even if you
don't normally make her wear a collar, it's a good idea to have one on
her with your name and phone number, just in case.
If you've never used a carrier for her before, it also can help to leave
it in the house with the door open for a few days so that she can
explore it and be accustomed to it in advance. The other thing is to be
sure and clean the carrier thoroughly and launder the towel or pad after
a trip to get rid of any "fear" smells that she'll leave.
