My son was on Fosamax and we just weren't seeing an increase in his bone
density so we switched to the Actonel and it was so much better. Still the
GI side effects, but just make sure you are upright for at least an hour
after taking it and take it with a lot of water. Also, when you are put on a
bone density drug you have to take Rocaltrol (calcitriol) along with it
(vitamin D) to make it work. The --dronates (alendronate-residronate etc)
will not work without vitamin D supplements at all, so that is a factor
also, but of course your doctor will prescribe it right along with whatever
he gives you. Good luck and of course it's your and your doctor's ultimate
choice but I would advocate for Actonel over Fosamax. Justin was on Fosamax
for two years, no change, Actonel for the year or year and a half before he
passed away and we saw big differences.
