Collies are generally easy to housebreak. I'm still working on my
6-month-old Saluki, but they are notoriously difficult, and she's actually
doing pretty well.
The best way is the crate--need a big one for a grown dog, but it's very
effective. A small room such as a bathroom can work, too, that's what we've
been using for our pup. Don't let out of cage or bathroom unless someone is
watching. After dog has been confined take outside immediately, and if they
go, praise, praise, praise and a treat or two Watch closely for signals.
Dog goes out after eating. With 4 kids, it sounds as if the owner just has
her hands full and has not been paying attention. Successfully raising a
pup is a time consuming task--as I am being re-reminded since it has been a
looooong time since we raised one. Enlist the older kids to be watchful for
the "signals". Certainly some of them should be old enough to help, unless
she is just disorganized about them, too.
