Margie,
If you are seeing something like, "Approx. Total Memory: 32.0 MB" on the
Display tab of dxdiag, it is telling you that your video card has 32 MB of
memory on the video card itself.
Another possibility is that your motherboard has its own video processor
rather than a separate video card. In that case, the motherboard
effectively steals some of your RAM to hold the video images, reducing the
amount available for use by Windows. However, this is usually only found on
less expensive machines. Those are the systems that have asterisks beside
their advertised amount of memory. When you read the fine print next to the
asterisk, it states that some amount of RAM, up to 64MB, is reserved for
use by the system for video and is not available for use by Windows.
