Oh, I'm a confirmed city gal at this point, and I do like the city life as
well. For me, it's either live smack in the middle of a big city or so far
out in the country you can't see any neighbors--suburban living never made
much sense to me. I never did get to live in the country, though, and at my
age, I'm better off sticking to the big city. Farm life is too much hard
work for an old woman, especially one who has never been used to it. My
great-aunt Hazel stuck it out on the family farm to the end, letting the
livestock go and renting off the land to the surrounding farmers to bring in
some spending money, but it was a tough life for her alone even then,
particularly as Amsterdam is up into New York State's snow country.
And, sure, one can find farms upstate to visit for a couple of weeks if you
want--there are some that bring in some spending money running summer bed
and breakfasts. Not sure I see the point in that, though, other than it
being as good as any other B&B if you want to spend some time in the
country. The pleasure in a farmer's life isn't really in watching the grass
poke up for 2 weeks in the summer, it's in a lifestyle the spreads over
seasons and even generations.
