Dangit why hasn't one of you (I am only at post 312 or so) told that Deborah
McLaren something to this effect:
Okay, so all MTs get interviewed in person face to face. That's fine, make
it a gold standard. Then when that MT comes in to work or takes on the first
assignment (because you hired him or her because he or she looked damn good
and professional irregardless of paper credentials) and you have to fire
them because of shoddy work, what did that get you? Well, first of all, you
lost time from your job when the same thing could have been done by phone,
electronically, and checking references. Secondly, you went through all that
paperwork (if hired as employee and not IC) of W4, benny forms, etc. when it
all could have been done electronically. Basically, considering that no one
in their right mind would want to impersonate an MT, we have pride and we're
conscientious and some fairly well off, but we're not Bill Gates FGS, so
what would be so glamorous as to impersonate an MT? Also, what did seeing
them in person do for you? Did it show you how fast they can type when there
are online tests that can be done and sent electronically that are accurate?
Did it tell you what a good ear they have for those docs and their lousy
dictation? Did it show you their work ethic? Did their promise to keep
things confidential in person mean more to you than their signed contract
they sent by email? And lastly, if you want to change it so damn bad, then
become a lobbyist and storm AAMT and cause a mutiny by golly, and if you're
so damn smart why aren't you a millionaire. You claim if you knew all the
answers you'd be lying on a beach somewhere. Well, apparently for someone
not in the MT profession you seem to know a hell of a lot more about it than
any of the ones who have done it for umpteen years, so why aren't you an
MTSO by now or the head of AAMT?
