Hi Dani,
While I have toyed with VR over the years I have always had an eye on the
budget. For instance I purchased my copy of Dragon Naturally Speaking
Professional 7 from Ebay in the USA and paid around AU$250. The price they
were asking for the same software here was around AU$1300.00 (current price
for DNS Prof 8:0 is over AU$1500.00!!!!! Same goes with a lot of equipment
for medical transcription. I ordered a DSS recorder (sorry forgotten the
exact model) for one of my clients and saved him over AU$300.00 by getting
it from the US. Headsets are another area with limited choice and hefty
price tags. I'm ever so grateful for the help here - it's saved me a small
fortune.
Incidentally, I can count on both hands the small number of MT equipment
suppliers in Melbourne, Australia - and they have a monopoly on price. USB
Footpedals for instance cost around AU$200 from these sellers. The maker of
Express Scribe (the free one) has the same product available for AU$100.00
approximately. Pity I had already purchased at the higher cost.
Another thing also is that in Australia the MT industry is only just
starting to grow with several larger enterprises setting up shop. I've been
running my own very small show for 15 years and have been something of a
pioneer with very few others doing the same.
Just thought I'd give you an idea of the situation here in Australia as it
is so different from the USA.
I certainly like to keep up with new developments though and would really
love to see how far I can push VR regards productivity.
Cheers,
ozgal
