I definitely agree. I have the cousin to Westies--a Cairn Terrier (for
those who don't know what a Cairn is, think of Toto in the "Wizard of Oz").
Best "little big dog" there is, IMO.

We "inherited" my grandpa's Chihuahua when he found out he was dying of
cancer. That dog was very nervous and barked constantly. Definitely didn't
like people. I wouldn't have another one.

If you want a dog your kids can enjoy hanging out with, I second the
terrier. These are rough-and-tumble little dogs, and they're sharp as a
tack. Mine does all kinds of tricks--everything from jumping through a
hoop, pointing to her nose when you say, "Where's your nose?" to a high-five
to "yodeling"--and then some. Regardless of your choice, though, I highly
recommend puppy training classes.
