The problem is that we will not allow an alternative--euthanasia. We
withheld feeding from my mother because she was very very explicit about not
wanting a feeding tube. She practically begged me not to allow to be kept
alive in a vegetative state, including both respiration and feeding tube.
(She was an RN, so very aware of procedures.) She had had a cerebral
hemorrhage, and doctors said there was no hope of recovery. She was 92.
But it was not easy waiting for her to die. She did not appear to suffer.
She was on Hospice. She never awoke after the cerebral hemorrhage.
When there is no hope, and it is decided not to use extraordinary means,
then euthanasia should be permitted. I cannot speak for Terri, but to live
in that state, if she does have any awareness, for 15 would be the worst
kind of cruelty. My husband and all three of my children know my wishes.
My doctor and I talked about this when my mother was dying. I do not think
she suffered--there was no appearance that she did, but I certainly did, and
it was great relief when the hospital called and told me she had finally
died. Of course I was sad, but I knew I had done what she wanted. Hospice,
and doctors felt we did the right thing. I KNOW I did.
