The sad and scary thing, though, is that you can make a living will and I
can still envision a scenario where this would happen to you anyway. As it
is, Terri Schiavo's situation was a normal one where her husband as next of
kin had absolute power to decide what was to happen to her, and look where
we are. It's an error to assume that there's anything unusual about it
other than the fact that her parents and her husband were each willling to
go to such lengths in pursuit of their view. A living will seems to be the
solution, but who knows if one day down the road my husband and my son might
not disagree on whether I may have changed my mind in the interim, and
battle it out in the courts? Then will Congress decide, "When in doubt,
maintain life"? It is truly frightening what has happened in the last
couple of days.
