I don't know if I could pull a feeding tube; I could have a respirator
unplugged. I could not breathe for my sister, but I could feed her and
give her water, even if it were done through a tube instead of her
mouth. The reason I have a problem with this is because Terri wrote
down nothing and people change all the time. How do we know that, if it
was said at all, it wasn't said as a causal remark without thought given
to it, like so many remarks we make? How do we know that she didn't
(before she couldn't) change her mind and want to cling to the life she
has as the best she can hope for? The problem is we just don't know.
Terri hasn't spent the last 15 years just "staring at the walls". She
has people with her a great deal of the time, and Dani, she was still
smiling before they pulled the tube. Was it just "reactive" on her
part? Aren't all smiles? If someone smiles at you, you normally smile
back and that doesn't mean you do it because you have no brain. I can't
find it in my heart to have sympathy for Michael because he has moved on
with his life. I have the utmost sympathy for anyone who loses a child,
and the Schindlers are losing the child they have loved for 41 years.
